The Enfield rifle was not issued to the Sepoys as it arrived in India just before the Mutiny; in fact the famed cartridges that were allegedly tainted with pig fat where in fact for the Enfield Rifle. This was a major disadvantage for the sepoys as the Enfield had an extra 500 yards of range on the brown bess.

Local, brigands and other disgruntled groups joined the Sepoy during the rebellion, part of their downfall was their inability to unify all the causes under one banner.
